Guardian Home Program

Guardian Homes are crucial to our program, as we always want our breeding dogs to be part of a family first, breeding prospects second. Partnering with us in this unique way allows you to have a high-quality, fully health tested dog at no upfront cost, in exchange for our program to retain breeding rights until the dog retires and lives out their best life with you.

What is a Guardian Home??

First and foremost, our dogs are beloved members residing in family homes. We believe that happy, well taken care of dogs produce the very best well-rounded puppies. For us to give our dogs and puppies the best possible home, it is important for us to limit how many dogs we keep in our home. However, to be a breeder of quality dogs, from time to time we pick a puppy to be evaluated for our guardian program to carry on strong bloodlines.

We like to keep a few of our pick puppies to monitor their growth and development, and some of these puppies will eventually fit into our breeding program. We prefer to place these pick puppies in Guardian Homes.  A Goldendoodle needs to be a part of the family to develop to their full potential, and therefore, we have the guardian program.

The Guardian family will raise, love and keep the puppy as a member of their family. The Guardian dog is your family pet and a part of your family, while ownership is retained by Millie's Goldendoodles.  This Guardian program allows local families an opportunity to own a breeding quality Goldendoodle without any upfront cost.

The Guardian is responsible for all vet costs associated with routine yearly veterinarian exams, yearly booster vaccines, rabies vaccines, Bordetella prevention, heartworm testing, etc. The Guardian family is also responsible for monthly heartworm medication, flea and tick prevention, and other preventive medications including vitamin supplements. Millie's Goldendoodles will cover all medical expenses related to breeding.

Once the dog has passed all required health testing, it will enter into our breeding program. This typically takes place around 18-24 months of age. Once we decide to retire the Guardian dog from our program we will spay or neuter the dog at our expense. After this takes place, we will legally transfer ownership of the dog to the Guardian Family.

We realize Guardian Homes are not designed for everyone as you will be without your dog at times and must follow specific requirements outlined in our Guardian Home contract. This program is great for families who are flexible, patient, and can afford routine pet care! Below are some of the obligations of being a Guardian.

How does it work for a female?

  • Once the female dog has passed all required health testing (at breeders expense) the female will enter our breeding program typically around 18 months+ of age.
  • When the female is in heat she will come to Millie's Goldendoodles to be bred (3-5 days).
  • She will return to  Millie's Goldendoodles 7-10 days prior to her due date to whelp and wean the puppies. Breeding female will be away from guardian home for 7-9 weeks for each litter.
  • We ask for an agreement of up to 4 litters total.  Contract will be signed.
  • When we retire her from our program Millie's Goldendoodles will pay to spay the dog and ownership passes to the guardian family.

How does it work for a male?

  • Once the male dog has passed all required health testing (at breeders expense) the male will enter our breeding program.  Usually around 1 year of age.
  • When a female is in heat male dog will come to Millie's Goldendoodles for breeding (average 3-5 days). He will return to  guardian home after each breeding.
  • We ask for an agreement of up to 6 breeding years. Contract will be signed.
  • When we retire a male from our program, Millie's Goldendoodles will pay to neuter the dog and transfer ownership to the guardian family.

Guardian Requirements

In order to be considered for the Guardian Home Program, we require that you:

  1. Live within 30 miles of 27055 for males and 60 miles for females
  2. Fenced Yard
  3. Own your own home.
  4. Experience owning and raising a puppy.
  5. The primary caregiver must have a schedule that will allow for the dog to not be left alone for extended periods of time and have flexibility for times of breeding.
  6. Provide basic obedience training for the dog, either with classes or at home. Basic obedience includes, but is not limited to: sit, stay, come, down, walking on a loose leash, potty-training and crate training. Crate training is a must as the breeding dog will be coming to the breeder’s home for periods of time.
  7. Maintain Health Insurance until ownership is transferred to the Guardian.  Typically around 4 years for female and 6 years for male (typically around $20-40 a month)
  8.  Provide Veterinary care as needed, including regular vaccinations at the Guardians expense. Administer and pay for:  Flea and Tick Control approved by Breeder as well as Heartworm Preventions approved by Breeder.  Guardian must provide the Breeder the dates of treatments and any vet care for the Breeders Records.
  9.  Keep dog well-groomed always. The dog will need regular brushing to keep coat from matting.
  10. Agreement that the dog will be an indoor dog only.  Will never be left in an unsupervised environment.
  11. No Smoking inside the home.
  12. Have reliable transportation and willingness to bring the dog to us when needed throughout the year for breeding and health testing purposes.
  13. No plans of relocating in the next 5 years.
  14. Regular grooming of the dog.
  15. Willingness to feed diet of breeders choice.
  16. Maintain open lines of communication with Millie's Goldendoodles concerning any matter related to the dog.
  17. Willingness to have a dog that will be needed for breeding.
    Females will have 4 litters.
For males, that involves willingness to bring male for breeding as needed within a 48 hours notice.
  18. Be willing to notify breeder when the female dog is in “heat;” within 48 hours.
  19. Have no other intact dogs in your home or yard (neutered or spayed dogs are OK).
  20. Willingness to allow us to visit your home and the dog. Allow the dog to stay with us a few times a year. This ensures the dog will remain comfortable with us. We will do our best to arrange these visits around travel/vacation schedules as long as we don't have puppies on the ground.
  21. Understand that breeder may need to make decisions about the Guardian Dog and you will have to respect those decisions. Examples may include, but are not limited to: keeping a female longer, additional vet care, etc.  All decisions ARE always for the betterment of the dog.
